Feeling Let Down by the Mainstream Media

May 23rd, 2018

I've been on a bit of an alternative media binge the last few months. I've listened to the Rubin Report, Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder and watched videos with views in the double digits ranging from homosexuals who no longer engage in homosexual acts and stay at home mums who want to be traditional mothers.

I used to hold pretty liberal opinions — I even was a marxist a decade ago — but with becoming a family man came a slight tilt towards the conservative and that has manifested itself in my recent interests. Though my trajectory is one of change from a left towards a right, I don't really want to pick sides anymore. I was fundamentally wrong about most things when I was younger and so I am careful with what I believe to be true and I try not to lecture people but instead just think carefully about things and make my thoughts heard.

I do ultimately feel let down by the mainstream media at this point though. I like to be introduced to new ideas — and alternative media has done exactly that — but I am not an expert at most things I read about so I would be happy to hear experts provide counter-points to things being said by political commentators.

Unfortunately it seems like weird ideas are not discussed in papers I used to read — they are dismissed up front. So I am left with commentators from one side, without anyone there to challenge their ideas. Maybe they are wrong, maybe they are right. I am supposed to figure this out by myself and that involves time I don't have.

So I end up feeling pretty let down by the mainstream media. I don't know how they could improve this as I don't understand media that well, but I certainly don't see anyone trying.
